But Maya was used to working with hustlers and thieves and con artists. She wasn't the type to accept something--anything--on faith. Especially the outdated nonsense of faith itself.
The simplest explanation was usually best. The simplest being that he was conning her.
But how? She'd only ever met one other person who could put thoughts into her head before. And he was a mute, ten-year-old kid. Not a lot of explanations there.
So. If she wanted an explanation...
Buy me.

He was not sure how exactly places like this worked, but he figured that if he wanted to give them his credits communication would happen. So he went inside, girding himself with an attitude of confidence. And very, very glad Han wasn't here to see him squirm.
A short transaction later--they wanted extra, for taking their subliminal billboard off the marquee--he was led to a small room to wait.

After Pryce shuffled around the girls, he relieved Maya from the marquee and brought her inside, giving her a pep talk, as if it were her first time or something.
Fresh-faced boy. Probably a virgin. Fine. Whatever. She assured him that she would play the 'sweetheart' routine and everything would be fine. Business as usual.
Except it wasn't business as usual. He brought her to the green room. Maya never worked the green room. It was on the top floor of the club, tucked away in a corner at the end of the hall. Gaudy green decorations hung off of the walls. And the bed (round with a rotating motor) sat in the middle, under a green-tinted mirror.
She eyed the mirror dubiously as Pryce bowed out of the room, oozing charm like a Hutt oozed...ooze.

With Pryce gone, Luke stepped forward, hands folded before him, his expression open.
"You don't believe me," he said, his tone tinged with regret.

And he was insane.
"It's a little far-fetched," she said, her actual speaking voice less refined than her telepathic voice. She folded her arms across her chest. "But I've never had anyone talk in my head like that before."
no subject
And then, maybe, she'd be able to escape this life.
no subject
It wasn't entirely unheard of.
But the boy had her for the night, so why not?
She sat down on the edge of the rotating bed and crossed her legs, gesturing for him to go ahead and prove it to her.
no subject
After a moment, Maya would feel herself start to rise from the bed, and Luke's eyes opened as he levitated her into the air, six inches above the surface.
no subject
Well, no. This was different. It was controlled.
Aside from the fact that a strange boy was the one controlling it and not her.
"Down please," she said a little sharply. "Down. Now. Thank you."
no subject
"I'm sorry," he said, waving his hands a bit. "That was... I maybe should've asked. But..." He cocked his head, watching her. "It's the sort of thing you could do, with training."
no subject
There was a funny prickling in the back of her mind. She sensed someone irritable above them. That was strange. The room was on the top floor. Someone on the roof, maybe?
She gave the mirror another leery glance, before turning her attention back on the stranger. "Who are you?"

And it was then that Maya realized she could hear it in the room. Not from him. But from that presence above.
Abruptly, she stood up and shoved him back against the wall, planting her hands around either side of his head and leaning her forehead down so her hair formed a curtain around their faces.
Someone is here looking for you.
no subject
For me? Why?
Which was a stupid question, really on so many levels. He reached out, opening himself up to his surroundings, and caught it. They weren't looking for him to give him good news, that much was clear.
Come with me, he insisted again. If he had to run, he would--but he didn't like leaving her here.
no subject
Which made her suspect.
Maya was not going back to an Imperial detention center again. More importantly, she wasn't going to let Yuri...
Kriff! Yuri!
My little brother. You have to get him out of here. If you think I'm powerful with this Force...thing. Look...the Empire wants him. Can you help him?
no subject
If they want him, then they shouldn't get him. Yes, I'll help. Where is he?
no subject
She'd started moving her shoulders a little bit, giving the spies a show, making them think that she and Luke were getting down to business. It was awkward, to say the least.
But things were going to get way worse in a second. She just...had a bad feeling about it.
no subject
What are you doing? Are they watching?
Great. Reflexively, Luke put his arms around her. It was very awkward.
How do we get out?
no subject
As for getting out...that was complicated.
If we just walk out right now, they'll know we know they're watching...
no subject
What would you suggest?
no subject
She wondered if he could feel her fear outside. Probably. The kid had a way of doing that.
We go back to the club, she supposed. See if we can slip out in the crowd.
no subject
But how to put them off the scent? Still holding her close, Luke closed his eyes and sent his thoughts upward, a message in his mind.
You have seen all you need to see. There are other matters to attend to.
It took some concentration, and so when he opened his eyes, it was aloud he whispered quietly to Maya. "I may have distracted them, but only temporarily. We need to move, and we need to look as though we're through, here."
no subject
When his thoughts returned to her, she had to bite back something of a smile. It seemed pretty clear that he didn't know what it was supposed to look like when they were 'through here.'
Sorry about this.
She stomped down on his foot. Hard.
no subject
Luke yelped despite himself, frowning accusingly at her. "What was that for?" he hissed.
no subject
With that, she crossed the room to the bed, pulling off the top, silky green sheet to wrap around her chest.
Already, she was reaching out with her mind to find Yuri.
Get to the door. We have to run.
